My research originally focused on two seventeenth century Spanish writers of novella: Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor and Mariana de Caravajal y Saavedra. I always have been interested in strong females that challenged the traditional social order and were considered ahead of their times. This interest includes a nun who wrote the first treatise about female prisons and some of the convicts. Currently, I am researching a 1587 chivalry novel, believed to be the only one written by a female Spanish writer.
I have extensive experience teaching all levels of Spanish language, culture and literature.
Some of the courses that I teach are:
- SP201-SP202 Intermediate Spanish (including Intermediate Spanish for Business)
- SP301-SP302 Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition
- SP355 Culture and Civilization of Spain
- SP357 Introduction to Spanish Literature
- SP361 Spanish Literature pre 1700
- SP371 The Supernatural in Spanish Literature
- SP372 Spanish Old Ballads: Love, Death and Fate
