Fr. John R. Fortin, O.S.B. Institute for Saint Anselm Studies Research Fund
The Fund will furnish an award to one Saint Anselm student who has been selected through a competitive process during the junior year to complete a major research project during the senior year on any aspect of the times, life, thought, writings, and/or spirituality of Saint Anselm of Canterbury in fields ranging from philosophy and theology to history and art.
The process for selecting the scholar will commence in March of the year prior to its award to an individual student. Saint Anselm juniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 overall and 3.3 in their major and are recommended by a faculty member in their academic department, who will help guide the student, will be eligible to submit a three-page proposal, including bibliography, describing the study on Saint Anselm to be undertaken during the senior year. The recommendation and proposal are to be submitted to the Director of the Institute for Saint Anselm Studies. The proposed project may be in fulfillment of the student’s major’s senior thesis requirement, but need not be so.
Students from all academic departments are eligible to apply for this award if they meet the criteria above. The evaluation committee will consist of the Director of the Institute for Saint Anselm Studies, a member of the faculty and a representative from the Academic Dean’s Office. The evaluation committee will choose one applicant to be the Saint Anselm Scholar in the student’s senior year.
The selected student will carry the title of the Saint Anselm Scholar for the student’s senior year. The student will work with a faculty mentor to complete the proposed scholarly project and, apart from any senior thesis presentation requirements within the student’s department, will present the project to the college community at a time designated by the Director of the Institute for Saint Anselm Studies. The project may, for example, be presented at one of the Institute’s Saint Anselm Conferences. The project may also be eligible for publication in The Saint Anselm Journal.
To apply, please submit your proposal and faculty recommendation by Friday, March 28, to Prof. Montague Brown, Director, Institute for Saint Anselm Studies (mobrown@anselm.edu).
The 2025-2026 Saint Anselm Scholar will be announced on Monday, April 28.
