Welcome to the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)
A tool for professional development in the workplace.
Saint Anselm College is working to support faculty, staff, coaches, and students with diversity, equity, and inclusion to provide a welcoming environment for all. This includes providing professional development. One of these development opportunities is through the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), which is a valid, reliable survey that will give you a snapshot of your current ability to navigate cultural differences and assist you in a personalized learning plan. The college is serious about its responsibility to provide such opportunities to you. We look forward to your participation.
This website provides a brief summary, a directory of members of the IDI Campus Team, and answers to frequently asked questions.

GETTING STARTED WITH THE IDI
The IDI is taken online (takes about 15-20 minutes) and the results capture where individuals are in terms of their ability to navigate cultural difference. Once you have completed the survey, someone from the IDI Campus team will schedule a meeting with you to review the results of the IDI and help you develop a learning plan. The survey results and meeting are completely confidential.
As of June 2023, over 90 faculty and staff members from over 12 committees and/or departments across campus have taken advantage of this professional development tool. If you or your group would like to explore the IDI at Saint Anselm College, the information below will get you started.
Sign up if you would like to be contacted to discuss this opportunity. You may contact the Senior Inclusion Officer's (SIO) office at ppope@anselm.edu or Karen Connor (Human Resources) at kconnor@anselm.edu. You can expect the following steps:
- You will participate in a brief (less than 30 minutes) orientation to the process.
- You will receive a link and complete the IDI Survey.
- You will be contacted to schedule a 60 minute CONFIDENTIAL debrief of your results and develop a learning plan
Typically, people complete their learning a few hours a month for 6-9 months. You will have the option to receive community support through private coaching, participate in luncheon discussions, and/or be set up with an IDI buddy/partner who is also developing their learning plan.
Join the fun! Be part of a learning community with colleagues!

Frequently Asked Questions
The IDI is a professional development tool used around the world in educational, corporate, and non-profit organizations, and it teaches individuals and groups where their strengths and weaknesses are when they are facing people with cultural differences. This tool assesses how you explore cultural differences with the use of a quick 50-item questionnaire (normally takes about 15-20 minutes to complete). Results contain customized reports that will inform you of your level of intercultural competence, as well as an individualized development plan for you to learn how to develop new intercultural skills, adapt to a rapidly-changing student body, and grow personally and professionally.
