The Time is Now: Our Vision for Transforming the Future of Healthcare

The field of healthcare is undergoing exciting seismic shifts. Thanks to new transformative technologies and and a focus on preventative healthcare and population health, patients who might have died 20 years ago can now survive.

The Covid-19 pandemic showed us just how vitally important it is for public health professionals to work closely with health practitioners in a response. The new School will bring disciplines together in ways that will teach students how to work together as a community and collaborate on health issues in exciting ways.

Rapidly increasing healthcare costs, higher patient acuity, and workforce shortages have increased demands on healthcare organizations. This means healthcare providers must be adept, ethical problem solvers as they navigate complex situations and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide seamless, top-quality care at every level.

In addition, the U.S. is becoming increasingly diverse. It is critical that today's healthcare providers understand social drivers of health and health equity along with contemporary social challenges, and promote open and inclusive environments.

While Saint Anselm’s nursing program has long been recognized among New England schools for its academic excellence and Benedictine values, many of our competitors have recently added nursing schools, constructed new facilities, and diversified their health services education portfolios. For example, Merrimack College (North Andover, MA) added a nursing major in 2019 and opened a new nursing building in January 2020, and Assumption University (Worcester, MA) did the same in September 2020. Providence College broke ground on its new School of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2023.

As we face the future, Saint Anselm College must expand and modernize our programs and facilities to uphold our responsibility in preparing future generations of healthcare providers to offer the most skilled, compassionate care and leadership. To both ensure the College’s future and the future health of our country, we are developing the Jean School of Nursing and Health Sciences—a school rooted in the ethical principles inherent in our Catholic and Benedictine liberal arts mission—and opening a new state-of-the-art facility, Grappone Hall.

With the emerging and urgent need for more public health professionals, anything Saint Anselm can do to propel all health professions forward will enrich the experience for students and educators, and will help us develop healthcare professionals who are taught to lead.

Grappone Hall

At the center of our campaign is the construction of a state-of-the-art healthcare learning facility that will allow Saint Anselm to elevate the excellence of our healthcare programs. Gadbois Hall, the current nursing building, was constructed in 1968. The building is long overdue for technical enhancements, like an updated patient simulation lab. A welcoming, well-equipped facility for healthcare education will help the College attract and enhance vital external partnerships, host healthcare leaders and collaborators, and put us in a stronger position to recruit both top faculty and students.

Constructing Grappone Hall

This campaign is important because I think it’s going to be one of the foundations to bringing Saint Anselm to a different level. It’s the biggest capital fundraising effort that the college has ever undertaken. We have to forge a path to success that is going to lift Saint Anselm so that more Anselmians continue to serve as nurses and in every other field throughout the world.
