Discover the different transformative opportunities that the Education Department at Saint Anselm has to offer students.
Education majors spend time in a classroom as early as sophomore year. The Sophomore Early Field Experience requires majors to complete a 30-hour clinical experience through the Principles of Teaching and Learning course. In this required course you discuss the theories and then apply what you learn to your assigned classroom.
Starting early ensures that teaching is the right career for you. It also gives you a lot of time in the classroom
Elementary Education majors spend five out of eight semesters in the classroom: sophomore, junior, and senior years.
Secondary Education majors also spend 80 hours plus an additional 13 weeks in the classroom.
Our program emphasizes clinical experiences with multiple and diverse grades and settings: urban, suburban, and Catholic. Each placement will be in a school with an experienced certified educator.
There are five clinical experiences beginning in the sophomore year that are embedded in education courses including the supervised student teaching experience for 13 weeks during senior year. Candidates will complete a clinical experience in one of each of the following grade groupings: (K-2), (3-4), and (5-6).
There are four clinical experiences beginning in the sophomore year that are embedded in education courses including the supervised student teaching experience for 15 weeks during senior year. Candidates will complete a clinical experience in both middle and high schools.
For licensure, teacher candidates must complete required courses (core, education, and second major if applicable), clinical experiences and internal and external assessment requirements. Teacher candidates complete the New Hampshire Teacher Candidate Assessment of Performance (NH-TCAP) in a seminar course during their clinical capstone experience. In addition, candidates must pass their state testing requirements to be recommended for a license to teach.
New Hampshire has reciprocity agreements with approximately 40 other states, extending licensure eligibility to a considerably larger geographical area. It is an individual’s responsibility to contact the destination state’s Department of Education in order to obtain licensing requirements and guidelines in that state.
Educations majors may continue their time on the Hilltop by earning a master’s degree in special education (M.Ed.) with licensure. Through our accelerated one-year program or more traditional pathway, the focused curriculum will enhance your educator skills and expand your career prospects for early childhood education through secondary education and in multiple settings.
