Members of the Saint Anselm College Music Performance Faculty present an evening of music in the gallery, featuring voice and instrumental performances of classical pieces. Always a remarkable event, this performance brings a resplendent sound of the music performance faculty’s collegial presence and extraordinary talent. Music performers include Heather Braun-Bakken, violin; Andrew Haringer, piano; Andrew Heath, trumpet; Molly Lozeau, piano; Johnny Mok, cello; Sean Parr, tenor; Matt Savage, piano; and Erin Smith Davis, soprano.

Compass Not Map: How Adaptive Thinking Can Transform Your Board

Nonprofit governance matters, and given the rapid pace of change (i.e. political divides, social turmoil, radical uncertainty), board leadership is more important than ever.  These times require that boards lean into leadership and adaptive thinking to support their crucial missions.

In this interactive session, we'll explore the role of governance in ensuring organizational resilience and provide actionable strategies for your board to put into practice. From concept to practical boardroom application, presenter Cathy Trower will address the ways of thinking and skillsets board members need including:

  • Understanding and staying focused on the big picture and adaptive challenges
  • Acting as a compass amidst changing conditions
  • Making meaning of and learning from circumstances
  • Asking better questions
  • Adapting board work appropriately in partnership with the executive and staff team.  

About the speaker:

CATHY A. TROWER , Ph.D. - For 32 years, Dr. Trower has provided consulting and coaching services to over 300 nonprofits including dozens of colleges and universities, independent schools, hospitals and healthcare systems, foundations, federated organizations, associations, and international NGOs. Her consulting focuses on improving board performance including best practices to enhance board culture and deliberations; foster an effective partnership with the CEO and senior leaders; improve strategic thinking and decision-making; and ensure effective committee structure, board composition, and accountability.

Bean Distinguished Lecture Series - Scientific Investigation of Art: Seeing Objects in a New Light

Dr. Richard Hark, a conservation scientist at Yale's Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, will discuss how our appreciation of a work of art is highly influenced by the lens through which we view it.  Using examples drawn from the collections at Yale and the Victoria and Albert Museum, his presentation will describe the analytical tools that were used to coax objects into revealing their secrets.

The Power of Storytelling: An Op-Ed Workshop

Program Description:

Powerful writing has the ability to shape perspectives and drive change. In this dynamic six-week workshop, you will engage in both group and one-on-one sessions in order to immerse yourself in the art of persuasive op-ed and opinion writing. You’ll have an opportunity to learn from nationally recognized experts in writing and editing, including being able to ask questions about your work. Ten participants will work directly with Trent Spiner, an editor-in-chief and former national political reporter, in one-on-one sessions designed to help you craft and publish an op-ed on a topic of your choice. This class will be a journey to craft impactful narratives that inspire meaningful action in your community. All classes will be conducted via Zoom.

What You'll Gain:

  • Develop, write, and pitch at least one compelling op-ed.
  • Group classes focused on brainstorming, drafting, and pitching op-eds.
  • Facilitated conversations and Q&A sessions with op-ed experts.

Participants will also receive individualized coaching sessions for hands-on writing, editing and pitching to media outlets. Those include:

  • Two one-hour coaching sessions with Trent Spiner, drawing from his extensive experience as an editor-in-chief and presidential campaign reporter.
  • Concrete results: a draft op-ed, pitch letter, and actionable leads for publication.

One-on-one coaching sessions will be individually scheduled

Audience: Open to all New Hampshire residents, with a special emphasis on those engaged in advocacy or working at mission-based non-profits.

Application Instructions: 

Registration fee for accepted applicants: $199

Fee covers two four-hour workshops and two hours of one-on-one coaching. Financial aid is available upon request. This program is supported by an endowment created by the N.H. Secretary of State's Office and the Center for Public Responsibility and Corporate Citizenship awarded to Saint Anselm College in 2013.
