About the speaker: Heather Cox Richardson is professor of history at Boston College. She has written about the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the American West in award-winning books whose subjects stretch from the European settlement of the North American continent to the history of the Republican Party through the Trump administration.
"Democracy Awakening" has garnered widespread acclaim, with Jane Mayer calling it "a vibrant, and essential history of America's unending, enraging, and utterly compelling struggle since its founding to live up to its own best ideals." About the moderator: Peter B. Josephson is a professor of politics at Saint Anselm College, specializing in political theory and philosophy. He has published articles and book chapters on politics and popular culture, the political philosophy of Henry Kissinger, the roots of modern political economy, religion and liberal politics, and the political practices of classical liberalism. His books include works on John Locke and, with co-author R. Ward Holder, on the presidency of Barack Obama and the political theology of Reinhold Niebuhr.

Join us for an engaging conversation with Jane E. Young '86, who served as the United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire from May 2, 2022, to January 17, 2025. The event will be moderated by Liana Pennington, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Saint Anselm College.
Before becoming the chief federal law enforcement officer for New Hampshire, Jane Young was the Deputy Attorney General for the New Hampshire Department of Justice. In this role, she led a dedicated team of approximately 170 professionals, including lawyers, investigators, paralegals, medical experts, and support staff. In addition to her managerial duties, she played a critical role in overseeing complex investigations and prosecuting high-profile cases, such as public integrity crimes and homicides.
Throughout her distinguished 30-year career at the New Hampshire Department of Justice, Young held numerous leadership positions, including Director of the Division of Public Protection, Chief of the Criminal Justice Bureau, and Chief of the Drug Unit. She began her legal career as an Assistant County Attorney in the Hillsborough County Attorney’s Office. Young earned her Juris Doctor from the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from Saint Anselm College.
Liana Pennington is a member of the Saint Anselm College faculty, specializing in criminal law, criminal procedure, police surveillance and cyber law. Her research blends socio-legal studies and criminal justice, with a particular focus on the impact of low trust in the criminal justice system. Professor Pennington's background includes experience as a trial attorney at the New Hampshire Public Defender's Office.
