The Gallo Family Endowed Scholarship Fund
Created in 1985, the Gallo Family Endowed Scholarship Fund has generously assisted many Saint Anselm College students with financial aid over the years. As an endowed fund, the Gallo Family Scholarship Fund will support Saint Anselm College students in perpetuity. There are few lay people in the history of Saint Anselm College who have had a more profound imprint on the Hilltop than Walter. Arriving in 1954 as a student and graduating four years later, Walter gave passion, energy, resources, generosity and leadership to Saint Anselm for the next half-century. In so many ways, his name is synonymous with what it means to be an Anselmian.
Walter devoted his life to serving others – his family, his fellow alumni, his country and the Greater Manchester community and beyond. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served with distinction until his honorable discharge four years later, at which point he returned to his beloved alma mater. He continued to serve in the reserves and retired as a Colonel after 33 years of service.
After leaving active duty, Walter dedicated the next 46 years to the college, serving as the first full-time Alumni Director, then as Vice President of Development, Vice President of Advancement, and finally as Vice President of Endowment until his retirement in 2000. During that time, Walter founded the Order of Golden Anselmians and was the driving force behind the growth of the Alumni Association, transforming it into the vibrant organization it is today.
Walter continued to serve the college from 2000 to 2018 as a special assistant to college advancement and alumni relations. Receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree in 2008, his citation correctly recalled his ability to grow and maintain relationships with his fellow alumni, remembering the names and affiliations of people through the generations of the college and working tirelessly to keep them connected to Saint Anselm.
On August 9, 2024, Helen Gallo Bryan ’81 P’26 passed away after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer at age 64.
Helen was a remarkable person whose heart and spirit touched everyone she met. She was a beacon of love and devotion to her family, cherishing every moment with her husband David and sons Daniel and Oliver ’26. Her passion for life was evident in everything she did, from her commitment to her alma mater to her love for good wine, Italian food, and the joy of sharing a meal with her family and friends. Her caring nature was reflected in her handwritten notes and postcards, and thoughtful gifts and phone calls to family and friends.
Helen was a wine professional and held leadership roles with E & J Gallo Winery, Winebow Group, and most recently with Vero Vino. Her 42-year career in the wine industry was filled with adventures, challenges and personal growth, and fostered her zest for traveling and exploring new cultures. Helen’s work ethic and core values inspired all who worked with her. She will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
After her father, Walter J. Gallo ’58, passed away earlier in 2024, Helen and her siblings Walter Gallo, Jr ’83, Geoffrey and Kathy Gallo ’85 and Kara Gallo Fountain ’91, moved by the outpouring of condolences and notes of appreciation about Walter, joined together to challenge other Anselmians to honor their father on Days of Giving in March by supporting the Gallo Family Endowed Scholarship. They raised more than $100,000 in scholarship funds to support students at Saint Anselm College.
