What brought you to the Hilltop as a student?
I made my decision to come to Saint Anselm on admitted students day. My deciding factor was the cleanliness of the labs in the biology and chemistry department. Along with the beautiful campus.
What brought you back as a professor?
A lot of my colleagues were professors when I was here. They were incredibly instrumental in my decision to want to be a professor at a small school. I really appreciated their dedication, how much they did for us, and how much they made me realize that I loved chemistry. When I was a senior here applying for grad school, I felt deep within my heart that I definitely wanted to be a professor and work with students at a small school. I thought that the most perfect job in the world would be to come back here.
What sets Saint Anselm’s chemistry and biology department apart from other schools?
I would describe myself as a medicinal chemist, so I am trying to make a new drug that will target cancer and stop tumor growth. In the lab, students are making the drug, and testing it in breast cancer cells. The research and laboratory experiences sets our department apart from anywhere else. You get one on one time with your professor who wants to help you succeed and watch you grow. One of the reasons I have a research lab is to work closely with my students and help them master their laboratory techniques, and to really understand the work they are doing along the way.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I provide my students with as many resources as I can. General chemistry and the first science courses you may take can be intimidating. I try to really break down the material for my students. I record my classes and give them my slides, so they have the opportunity to go back if they get lost. I do a lot of note taking, and try my best to really give students what they need to succeed.
What do you want your students to leave with when they graduate?
I want them to take away that Chemistry is applicable to the real world in many different ways even if you are going to be a PA or doctor, these skills and problem solving techniques that you’re learning will help you in real life with whatever you're doing and are so important.
Do you have any advice for students who want to pursue a career in biology and chemistry?
Don’t be afraid to go see your professors. We are here to help you. Even if it's to stop by my office and tell me about your vacation. That is what we are here for. At such a small school we have the ability to form these relationships, which is really beneficial. I would not be here today without the professors and mentors that I’ve had.
