Join us for an evening of incredible ‘trad’ music with an edge that is totally 21st Century! The Ukraine’s astonishing quartet DakhaBrakha is a punk-folk-circus-rock band whose members stride onto the stage in full Cossack regalia, including those amazingly tall, black, curly sheepswool hats. They proceed to weave a magic spell with music that ranges from traditional Ukrainian folk songs set to a hip-hop beat, to otherworldly four-part close harmonies reminiscent of Middle Eastern chants, to hilarious send-ups in, English and Ukrainian, of the schlockier traditions of pop music and r&b. For this performance, DakhaBrakha (which means ‘give/take’ in Ukrainian) shares the evening with the kamikaze style of Quebec’s Yves Lambert Trio, whose brilliant technique demonstrates how roots music continually reinvents itself within modern contexts.
